Teeth Whitening Procedures

Whitening (Bleaching)
This can be provided in the surgery or in your own home. Whether you have naturally darker teeth or they have darkened with age, we can provide the whiter smile you've always wanted. Teeth whitening is a procedure done to remove stains and discolouration of teeth, while improving their colour through a bleaching process to make them look whiter.

For heavily stained teeth a significant improvement in their appearance can be achieved following procedures such as scaling and polishing or air polishing / abrasion from a dental hygienist. This would be classed as an external whitening procedure. Placing veneers or white fillings could be also classed as as an external whitening procedure, but involve removing tooth structure to place them, a destructive process. This is not always necessary, however, with some white filling or covering procedures.

At Church View Dental Clinic we do a number of in-surgery immediate teeth whitening procedures as well as professional take-home tooth whitening systems with custom made trays.
Teeth whitening is a procedure that should always be carried out under the supervision of a dentist or hygienist / therapist, to ensure the patient's safety.

Home Teeth Whitening System
The take home whitening kits provide more permanent results over a longer time scale whereas laser whitening offers immediate results. A combination of the two provides the perfect solution to both immediate and long-term whitening.

Opalescence® from Optident is the main home system used by the clinic for our patients. We offer this in various carbimide peroxide concentrations depending on how quickly the patient wishes to whiten their teeth and whether they have problems with sensitive teeth or not. We also use the Perfect Bleach system from VOCO and the Pola systems.
Some people respond very well to teeth whitening and have dramatic whitening results whereas others may notice very little difference at all. A lot depends also on whether the patient has uneven or even discolouration of their teeth. Dr Algra, Dr Patel, Ms Chana or Mrs Inwood will be able to advise you on the likely results expected with your teeth.

Laser Teeth Whitening Procedure
Before any whitening procedure a visit to the hygienist is recommended, removing any surface stains and tartar.
Church View Clinic tends to use the first (SmileX) and second generation (Evolution Ice) Enlighten systems for this procedure. As with all systems used the dentist will make a record of the shade/colour of the teeth before the procedure to show the patient the difference achieved after the whitening. This is either recorded using a tooth coloured shade guide or by taking a digital photograph of your teeth. The dentist will also take impressions for the patient's trays to be used for their home system later to maintain their level of whitening.
The fisrt generation system from Enlighten involves placing the bleaching compound directly on the teeth to be treated after a barrier is placed on the gums and lips to isolate these areas from the compond. The patient then undergoes usually four 10 minute exposures under a blue plasma light. Between each exposure a new application of whitening gel is applied. The whole process takes approximately an hour and a half. At the patient's second appointment they pick up the home system.

The second generation system from Enlighten involves the patient first being fitted with trays to use a system at home for two weeks followed by a third appointment in the surgery to apply the in office system with or without a plasma light. This appointment again takes about one and a half hours. The patient is then also given a home system to maintain and enhance the whitening. The system is better suited for patients that require deep bleaching to even out uneven discolouration. However, it will not suit patients that need their teeth whitened quickly for i.e. a function, who are not able to wait two weeks.

We now offer other office whitening systems such as Perfect Bleach Office+ from VOCO depending on what will give the best results for a particular patient.

As with all the whitening systems patients may experience tooth sensitivity. Patients are also advised not to eat or drink for example black coffee or red wine right after such a procedure as the enamel is temporary porous.

Dr Algra, Dr Patel, Dr Wilcynski and Ms Chana can advise patients if they are suitable for these procedures.
